We've all heard the news of the Large Hadron Collider that lies beneath the borders of Switzerland and France, in a 27 kilometer tunnel, splitting particles and attempting to replicate the moments after the big bang.
A lesser known story in the news this week is about the United States' government funded proton accelerator that was being built under Waxahachie Texas in the early 1990's. The article titled, $2 billion down the hole, and all Waxahachie got was a missed opportunity, by David Casstevens on Star-Telegram.com reports:
Waxahachie was once the future home of the superconducting super collider… Construction in Ellis County began in 1991. Workers sank 17 shafts and bored almost 15 miles of tunnels.... But when the estimated cost rose from $5 billion to $12 billion, Congress killed the funding in 1993. At that time, the project had already spent $2 billion.Wow! $2 billion worth of abandoned collider is underground Waxahachie, Texas! A large trucking company called J.B. Hunt has since purchased the buildings on the main site of the facility. I wonder what kind of great deal they got on the property?
